Beef Tallow - Tallow is commonly used in soap making because it makes a hard bar that lasts a long time. Tallow contains high levels of vitamins A, D, E, and K as well as antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are not commonly found in modern skin care (most modern skincare doesn't even contain natural ingredients). Butterfly creek chooses to use this ingredient because it produces a rich creamy lather that is gently cleansing and wonderful for your skin.
Castor Oil - Because it's rich in fatty acids, castor oil has many moisturizing effects. Due to the makeup of this oil it is one of the best moisturizing ingredients for your skin. It prevents wrinkles, fights acne, soothes, moisturizes, brightens, and gives us big bubbles in soap.
Cocoa Butter - Cocoa butter is a non-greasy ingredient and is highly absorbent on the skin. It diminishes scars and stretch marks, helps to prevent dry skin and flakiness, provides anti aging properties, lessens skin irritation, moisturizes deeply into the skin, can be used as a makeup remover, and is very soothing.
Coconut Oil - The fatty acids in coconut oil make it a soothing cleanser for the skin, and scalp. It gives our products great bubbles, and glide. It offers a unique combination of cleansing, firming, and skin loving properties. Coconut oil is harvested from the seeds of the coconut tree.
Hemp Seed Oil - This product is an amazing source of fatty acids. It helps to keep the skin hydrated all day long. It is non comedogenic (won't clog your pores), anti-inflammatory, full of vitamins, antioxidants. But with the Hemp and CBD trend there are a lot of questions we get about the ingredient. What is it? Will it make me high?
CBD oil is made from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the cannabis sativa plant - the part of the plant where cannabinol is found (THC that gets you high)
Hemp seed oil is made from the seeds of the same plant, meaning there is little to no CBD content. In short...no hemp seed oil is not the same as CBD or the cannabis plant you may be familiar with. It contains no cannabinoids (THC - that will get you high) because they are not present in the seeds of the hemp plant which the oil is made from.
Olive Oil - Olive oil can help to moisturize your skin and give it a healthy vibrant glow. The natural oil also leaves your skin feeling smooth and soft, this is because live oil has a natural ability to hold moisture which can help with dry, cracked, or chapped skin.
Palm Oil - There is a lot of hype around palm oil and inethical ways that some companies are sourcing the product. Here at Butterfly Creek we can promise you that our palm oil is sourced ethically and safely. As a soap ingredient palm oil offers numerous benefits to the skin, including anti-aging, cleansing and moisturizing qualities. Palm oil contains a re-fatting agent that restores skin's natural oil rather than stripping it away like many detergent based soaps.
Shea Butter - Shea butter is one of the best natural moisturizers available. Essential fatty acids and vitamin F are present in shea butter to help the skin to inhibit conditions like eczema. It is best for acne prone skin. Shea butter has unique compounds of cinnamic acid and SPF which helps guard the skin against environmental damage. Shea butter and cocoa butter are almost interchangeable but it has its own benefits so we add both to our products; provides maximum moisture to the skin, protects against harsh weather conditions, soothes muscle fatigue and heals wounds. Guards against: rashes, insect bites, stretch marks. Does not clog skin pores, and smoothens and replenishes the skin.
Sodium Hydroxide - This is the elephant in the room with all cold process soap. What is it? it is also known as lye, it is an acid that is used in all true soap bars. When seen on our ingredient list it may stand out because it sounds like a harsh ingredient. In reality, you can not make soap without it - but that does not mean that it is in the final product. Most companies leave this ingredient out of their labels because it is a chemical and it is not present in the soap after saponification (the process of making soap). Butterfly Creek decided to include this product on the label because you deserve to know how your soap is being made. Sodium hydroxide is used in many of your everyday products that you may use daily; medicines such as aspirin, anticoagulants, and cholesterol reducers. Water treatment processes, paper recycling processes, food and vegetable de-skinning and canning processes, cleaning and disinfecting.
Saponification - Saponification is a process that converts fats, oils, or lipids (the acid) into soap by combining them with sodium hydroxide (the base). The chemical reaction relies on friction and self generated heat. Through saponification, the acid and the base are neutralized. Once the proper amount of acid and base are combined, the chemical reaction begins, but this is not where our soapmaking ends. As we stir, we look for a trace. This is a telltale sign that the cold-process soap has reached a point in saponification where we can start to incorporate all of the goodies that make our soap so great! Next we pour our soap into molds and add extra elements to the tops of some of our soaps. The molds are placed in a draft-free environment and kept warm for a period of time to facilitate the continuing chemical reaction. Once cooled, the soap will be ready to un-mold and cut there is no sodium hydroxide in the soap at this point. Saponification is virtually complete at this point. The soap is then left to cure and harden for a period of time then it is pH tested, wrapped and sent to our customers. As you can see there is no lye left in the finished product!!
Sweet Almond Oil - This oil is suitable for all skin types. Almond oil has been used for centuries to soothe the skin and treat minor wounds and cuts. Sweet almond oil is full of vitamin E, and vitamin A, monounsaturated fatty acids, protein, potassium and zinc. Your skin needs it!
